Helping Senior Beagles Find Their Way Home

Whenever possible, B.O.N.E.S. accepts senior beagles (10 years or older) into the program. It can be a challenge to place these dogs in forever homes because adoption statistics show that adopters are concerned about a shortened life span and increased veterinary costs.

But the truth is, these beagles make wonderful companions! Many of our senior beagles are in relatively good health once they are vetted and have had their dental work. They might be a bit slower and require some extra attention, but they are just as loyal and loving as their younger fellow beagles. They deserve a place to call home!

To address the problem of placing senior dogs we developed the Sensational Senior Beagle Program to encourage people/families to provide a home with a "supported adoption" for the dog's remaining years.

This is how it works: The adoption fee will be waived and B.O.N.E.S. will retain veterinary rights on the dog. B.O.N.E.S. will fund a set amount (determined annually) of financial support each year toward veterinary care for the "supported adoption" while the adoptive home provides for the daily needs of the dog: love, food, shelter and exercise. Veterinary care will be coordinated through the B.O.N.E.S. medical team and the SSB team to ensure that adopters get the advantage of rescue discounts, etc. Any funds not used during the current year will carry over to the next so that a balance can be built up against a time when more complex care beyond the usual senior blood panel, checkup, vaccinations and preventatives may be needed. The adoptive home may opt to donate some of the routine vet care to B.O.N.E.S as a tax deductible donation at the time of the contract signing or at any time after by letting the Sensational Senior Beagle Program Director know.

It is our hope that this program will allow us to accept more of the hundreds of requests we get to take in beagles over the age of 10. We are very happy to be able to offer this supported adoption situation for some very needy and loving beagles who are just looking for a warm place with love and understanding to rest their heads in their golden years.
