About 320 folks (half of them people, the other half beagles and beagle wannabes) converged on Collinwood K-9 Services in Auburn, Massachusetts, for the 12th Annual Beagle Bash on September 26th, 2015. Our theme was "Beagle Spa Day." A lot of happy beagles walked and sniffed around, both inside and out in the sunshine, and signaled their approval with heartfelt "Aroos!"
We gathered to celebrate twelve years of B.O.N.E.S. as an organization dedicated to rescuing beagles. Our guest speakers included Emily Patterson of DeTails Grooming (in Rhode Island), who spoke about the proper grooming of beagles and demonstrated helpful tips. Dr. Jeff Corey and Vet Tech Emily LeBlanc of Healing Paws Veterinary Rehabilitation (also in Rhode Island) discussed tips for keeping beagles fit and active, including ways to prevent injury. Dominique Nicolay, Andrew Valk, and their beagle Malamar from Massachusetts Bed Bug Busters, demonstrated how they use of beagles to detect the presence of bed bugs.
Because this was "Beagle Spa Day," B.O.N.E.S. volunteer Lisa DiNicola offered nail trims, and lots of our pampered pooches indulged in massages provided by three students from the Bancroft School of Massage Therapy in Worcester.
Human attendees got a chance to learn about our Sensational Senior Beagle (SSB) program with a table hosted by SSB Coordinator Susan Cannon. Several white-faced seniors were present and ready to accept a gentle head rub and a "hello" from all.
Beagles were also encouraged to participate in the scavenger hunt and games. "Bobbing for hot dogs" was the most popular. B.O.N.E.S. "Adoptables" Pippi, Pickles, and Max were around to show off their cuteness as were many of our B.O.N.E.S. alumni who joined in the parade.
As always, B.O.N.E.S. merchandise (including our 2016 Beagle Calendar and tee shirts) were popular. Our guest vendors included Three Dogs Sauces, Jack's All Naturals, Stella & Dot Independent Stylist, Tricky TrisKuts and Robin's Stuff for Dog Walkers. Erin Mathieu Photography offered pet portrait sittings and kept each dog happily engaged to strike a bright-eyed pose for the camera.
Tasty pizzas and cool beverages were some of the food served at the Beagle Cafe; thank you Papa Gino's of Auburn for your donations! As always, we all enjoyed hunks of the Beagle Bash Cake.
Last but not least, the silent auction and raffle baskets gave a sense of excitement and drew much-appreciated donations as we wound down the day and said our goodbyes to friends, old and new, canine and human. We wish to thank all the donors who put on their thinking caps and contributed the items for those wonderful baskets and truly imaginative auction items. There were some good-natured bidding wars for those tasty collections all wrapped up, tied with ribbons, and ready to go home with the lucky raffle winners.
We owe so many thanks to the people who made this event a success. There are too many to list them all, but a special thanks to Abby Pimentel for organizing the volunteers and arranging for the food, Cassandra Ogden-Meyer for arranging the basket donations and our media outreach, Sandi Church and Glenda Templet for organizing the games, and Sharon Vartanian for coordinating finances.
Finally, a huge thanks to Kate Fantoli and Lisa Natanson, co-chairs, for pulling everything together and making Spa Day a treat for all of us. Arooo!!
