I have been adopted! Wow, it has been a long road, but I am now healthy and have been adopted. My liver shunt is now 75 percent closed since my surgery at the end of November. My new family is continuing with my special diet and watching closely so I won't eat anything bad for me. I also have medication that must be continued. I will need routine testing and may require medication and/or diet changes as I get older. SO with all that going on you know I have found a very special family. I have three new buddies to play with which is really great. Take a look at my video and watch. That is me in the fancy new sweater. Don't I look cool! I cannot thank B.O.N.E.S. enough. Not only did you take a chance on me (how could you resist my cute face?) but the volunteers all rallied round to raise a great deal of money for my care. I owe you all a great deal. But particularly my foster mom, Mindy Aumann. She was up with me at all hours, saw me through times when none of us were sure I would survive. But she stuck with me and I will always have a special place in my heart for her. Here are some new photos:

Original Story: B.O.N.E.S. was recently asked if we could take in a puppy mill/pet store puppy that seems to have some kind of liver disease. They said she would never grow as big as other beagles and would never live as long as other beagles. They were having trouble finding someone to help her and were going to have to euthanize. Of course our answer was "Yes! This is what rescue is for." B.O.N.E.S. gives these beagles a second chance. We knew she would have a tough road ahead, so we named her "Hope". In her first 6 months of life before B.O.N.E.S., she had been on antibiotics for 5 months, dewormer 3-4 times, nebulizer treatments, and other medications. When Hope first came to our home, she slept most of the day. She was only awake for about an hour or so in the evening, during which she would play only a little. She definitely did not act like an ordinary 6 month old pup and looked to be only skin and bones weighing only 9 pounds. She didn't know what grass or rain was, and at first, she would only potty on the concrete. She is still learning to go up and down the stairs and potty outside. She has the sweetest personality and looks to her caretakers as her mama. She loves to snuggle, even coming up to burrow down deep between you and the arm of the couch when she's tired. She loves soft beds. She will find the fluffiest comforter to burrow in, or she will dive into the pile of laundry fresh from the dryer. She does get cold easily, so anything warm is her favorite. She loves going outside on a sunny day and lying stretched out with her belly on the warm grass. With our vet, we decided to see how she responded to life in a home with consistent loving care and determine what testing was needed from there. Many tests, a couple of surgeries, and lots of love later, she is a happy beagle. |
