Ally
This is Ally, a beagle rescued from an abusive situation and adopted into a loving family.

Adopting a beagle can be a wonderful experience for all involved. Our goal is to find each beagle his or her forever home and our volunteers work carefully to find the right match for each beagle and for each approved adoptive home.

Our beagles are placed according to the type of home that best suits their needs. Adopting a dog is a big commitment, and we strongly encourage adopters to think about their decision carefully. We recommend taking an obedience class with your new beagle, as it is a wonderful bonding experience, and it teaches you to establish leadership rules in your home. Regular exercise is also important for any dog, and it will benefit you too. We will help you with some of the initial steps to transition your new dog into your home, but you must be committed to providing adequate structure, exercise, nutrition, and medical care for the lifetime of your dog.

Again, our goal is to find a "Forever Home" for all our beagles, a home that is the right match for both the beagle and the adoptive family. This is a serious decision, please think it through carefully.

The B.O.N.E.S adoption process is outlined below. We look forward to working with you.

Adoption Process

  1. Please click on this link to fill out an application on line Adoption Application or we can mail you one if you call 508-473-2228. If you are unsure about a beagle and their characteristics, please read our Learn about beagles page for some fun (but true) information.

  2. Please read our Standards of Adoption before submitting your application. These standards include specific guidelines for puppies. Filling out an application or going through the screening process is not an automatic approval for adoption.

  3. Please note that we do not accept applications for specific dogs because preference to dogs is given to adopters by their date of approval and matching the adopter's needs to the dog's needs. However, you can indicate if you are interested in a particular age range or gender. If there is a specific dog that you are interested in on the website, you can let your adoption counselor know once you are approved. We can look into that dog as a possible match for you, but we will have to make sure your lifestyle is a good fit for the dog's personality and energy level.

  4. The Adoption Counselor will contact you by phone or e-mail and set up a time to talk about your application, about beagles in general, and about the rehoming of B.O.N.E.S. beagles.

  5. Our next step includes talking with your Veterinarian (if you have one) or a personal reference AND doing a Home Visit. All family members and/or people in the household who will be a part of the beagle's new life need to be present for the Home Visit.

  6. The Adoption Counselor will notify you shortly after the Home Visit regarding your approval as an adopter through B.O.N.E.S. Once an adopter is approved they can begin to look at our available dogs, along with their counselor, and work toward an adoption.

  7. Once there is a potential match we will put the adopter in touch with the dog's foster home. If everyone agrees on the placement we will facilitate the adoption. We rely on our foster families to have the best knowledge of the dog(s) in their care and their assessment of the potential match is necessary before an adoption can take place.

  8. The Adoption Counselors are available to answer any questions you might have throughout the process and will be available to provide guidance during the adjustment period and for the following months.

  9. There will be an adoption contract for you to sign during the adoption of your beagle Click here to read a copy. B.O.N.E.S. charges a $275 adoption fee which is due upon adoption. Puppies are $325.00. Beagles aged 8 and over are $225.00. If you adopt a pair of beagles (two at one time) the fee will be $450.00. Checks should be made out to B.O.N.E.S. Inc.

Standards of Adoption

  • Adopters must be 18 years of age or older. All adults in the home must be in agreement on the adoption of a beagle, and are required to be present during the home visit.

  • Beagles will be given regular and routine vet care, proper nourishment/water and be kept in a clean, healthy and stimulating environment.

  • All beagles will be spayed or neutered. Puppies must be spayed/neutered by 6 months of age, B.O.N.E.S requires proof of sterilization and reserves the right to remove a dog from a home if this policy is not followed.

  • Beagles can not be adopted as gifts or as the sole responsibility of a child. No dog adopted through B.O.N.E.S. can be given away or sold, they must be returned to B.O.N.E.S.

  • Beagles, less than 12 months of age, will not be adopted to families that have children under the age of 4. All applicants with young children will be looked at on a case by case basis. Dogs adopted to families with young children must be known to be "child friendly".

  • All beagles must have proper ID (identification, rabies tag etc.) worn at all times. Beagles should not be allowed to roam at large, BONES reserves the right to remove a beagle from it's home if this procedure is not being followed.

  • Currently owned pets must be up to date on all vaccines. We recommend that resident dogs and cats be spayed or neutered. For information, please visit our spay and neuter information page.

  • Adopter agrees to pay the adoption fee and sign the adoption contract required by B.O.N.E.S. the day of adoption.

PUPPY Standards in addition to the regular Standards:

  • We will not adopt out puppies to families with a child under 4 years of age.

  • A $100 deposit will be due upon approval. This will not be refunded if you change your mind. It will be applied to the adoption fee.

  • The balance is due when you receive your puppy.

  • We will collect a $75 deposit for spay/neuter. Upon proof of spay or neuter, this will be returned to you.

  • Puppies require someone to be available to take them on potty breaks every couple of hours. They wil not be adopted out to families where there is no one available to perform this function.

  • The adoption fee for puppies is $325.00.

  • As with all our adoptions, final approval is at the discretion of the Board of Directors.

Repeat Adopters

Thank you for returning to B.O.N.E.S. to adopt another beagle! Although you have adopted from B.O.N.E.S. before, we still have a process we must maintain to match you with the best dog for your home.

A new application must be completed if it has been over 6 months since you last adopted or if your previous adoption counselor is not available to assist you with your new adoption. (It’s a good idea to just go ahead and complete the application.) If your previous counselor is available, we will assign you to them again, as long as they have the time to give your application the proper attention it deserves. If your previous adoption counselor is no longer volunteering in adoptions, then you will be assigned to a new adoption counselor. The counselor will do a phone interview with you to make sure they get the most accurate information about your home, lifestyle, and the behavior of your current pet (if you have one). All of this information will help us match you with the right beagle.

We always require vet check for your current pets and if you owned a pet within the last two years. We often do not require another home visit, but sometimes we need to, as many of the previous home visits may be outdated or unavailable from the previous counselor.

Thank you for returning to B.O.N.E.S. for your next furry family member. We hope to keep it simple and make it as quick as we possibly can. We will try our best to find you just the perfect beagle for your home.

Please see our "frequently asked questions" below for more information.

Sincerely,
B.O.N.E.S Adoption Team

Frequently Asked Questions from Repeat Adopters

Why do I need to complete a new application?
1. We just want to insure we have the most current information on file in case things have changed since you last adopted.
2. We need all your updated contact information and your current veterinarian’s contact information.
3. Our application asks you to provide details that are useful in matching the appropriate dog to your home. For example, we need to know how long a dog is home alone, if you have other pets, and if you have a fenced yard. Why is this important? Some of our beagles cannot be left alone for extended hours, some must live with other dogs, some must be only dogs, some chase cats, and some beagles are escape artists that require securely fenced yards. (Those are just a few of the details we are looking at.)

I see a beagle on the website that would be perfect for my home? Why can’t I choose my own dog?
1. There already may be a waiting list for a dog that is on our website. We often have a list of approved adopters waiting for just the right beagle to show up on our website. We match dogs according to our current adopter’s approval date.
2. More importantly, the goal of our adoption counseling process is to match you with a dog that will be a good fit for your home, lifestyle, and your current pet’s personality. Our adoption counselors are privy to details about each dog on our website that may make a dog incompatible with your home. We’d hate for you to be disappointed with the dog once you adopt it.

Why do I need an adoption counselor and another interview? I’ve been through this already.
If your previous adoption counselor is no longer volunteering in adoptions, we will need to match you with a new adoption counselor so that they can get a sense of your lifestyle and your current pets’ personalities. For example, the adoption counselor needs to understand how much you intend to exercise the dog or how your dog or dogs interact with other dogs. If you have a cat, we need to know how the cat reacts to dogs. Do you live in a location where your neighbors might complain about a vocal beagle? Then we’d need to find a quieter beagle for your home. Again, this is all so that you will be happy with the dog we place in your home.

Why do you check with my vet? You already did this.
B.O.N.E.S. is a rescue organization that often takes in animals that need rehabilitation. Therefore, we spend most of our funds received on vet bills. It is important that we know that you have provided your previous beagle with adequate veterinary care including routine exams and preventative testing, kept the dog’s vaccinations up to date, and kept your dog on monthly heartworm and flea/tick prevention. We also need to know that you gave your dog good veterinary care for any other illnesses or injuries.

Why would I need another home visit? I already had one.
Often, we can waive a home visit on a previous adopter if your vet check is successful. However, if you have moved, added more pets (including your last B.O.N.E.S. beagle), had children, or have other new housemates or changes in circumstances, we may require another home visit.

Having an updated home visit does not mean that we question your ability to provide another dog with a good home. Please bear in mind that a home visit provides the adoption counselor a clearer vision of your lifestyle, your current pets’ personalities, and your home and property layout to assist in our matching process. We use the feedback from the home visit volunteer to match you with the right dog for your home. Home visits for previous adopters are determined jointly by your adoption counselor and the Director of Adoptions.
